Description

**Simple Machines, Heat Transfer and Light Waves Card Sorts**

This bundle includes four sorting activities for physics concepts. The first is classifying items as one of the six simple machines, the second is distinguishing between the three types of heat transfer, the third has students sort objects by the amount of light that passes through them, and the fourth set contains information on the wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum. Each sort contains photographs of items, sorting sheets and answer keys. Different sizes and formats of cards are provided to use in a variety of ways. The large cards can be used for science centers or stations while the small ones will fit in interactive notebooks. Use these sets together or separately. All the sorts can be differentiated to fit the needs and levels of your students. Perfect for ELL, SPED, visual and kinesthetic learners.

**This Resource Includes**

· Simple Machines-48 different color picture cards in 4 formats (Inclined Plane, Screw, Wedge, Wheel and Axle, Pulley, and Lever)

· Heat Transfer-24 different color picture cards in 4 formats (Conduction, Convection, Radiation)

· Light Waves-24 different color picture cards in 4 formats (Transparent, Translucent, Opaque)

· Electromagnetic Spectrum-35 different color cards in 3 sizes (Headings, Examples, Wavelengths, Uses, and Dangers)

· Sorting Sheets (full-size, half-size, differentiated)

· Category Labels

· Answer Keys

NGSS5-PS1-3
Make observations and measurements to identify materials based on their properties. Examples of materials to be identified could include baking soda and other powders, metals, minerals, and liquids. Examples of properties could include color, hardness, reflectivity, electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, response to magnetic forces, and solubility; density is not intended as an identifiable property. Assessment does not include density or distinguishing mass and weight.
NGSSMS-PS4-2
Develop and use a model to describe that waves are reflected, absorbed, or transmitted through various materials. Emphasis is on both light and mechanical waves. Examples of models could include drawings, simulations, and written descriptions. Assessment is limited to qualitative applications pertaining to light and mechanical waves.
NGSSMS-PS1-2
Analyze and interpret data on the properties of substances before and after the substances interact to determine if a chemical reaction has occurred. Examples of reactions could include burning sugar or steel wool, fat reacting with sodium hydroxide, and mixing zinc with hydrogen chloride. Assessment is limited to analysis of the following properties: density, melting point, boiling point, solubility, flammability, and odor.
