The Mission:
Often we have students measure the circumference of a circle and dividing by the diameter to approximate pi. This exercise provides an alternative: students will experiment with a pendulum, and use the formula for its period to determine an approximation for pi. They will repeat and refine their experiment with multiple measurements. The Take-Home Message: Pi is an important number which appears in mathematics, physics and more. Its value can be determined experimentally using the equation for the period of a pendulum.
