Description

Engage students with a real world math project as they run a pizza place and explore combinations and permutations in a meaningful way. This probability activity helps students apply counting principles through real-world decision making.

The Pizza Place Math Project gives students a real-world way to explore combinations and permutations through a hands-on biness scenario. Instead of abstract counting problems, students analyze menu choices, calculate possible outcomes, and apply probability and counting principles in a way that makes sense. This real world math activity is perfect for Algebra 2, probability units, or advanced middle school math classrooms looking for meaningful engagement.

Pizza! Pizza! Mario & Luigi’s Pizzeria wants to make sure everyone knows that they are the best of the best. At their pizzeria, they allow customers to choose any number of toppings from their list to create pizzas and lasagnas. Join in on the fun with this 21st Century Math Project!

In this 9-page PDF, you will be given a mapping to the Content Standards, an outline for how to implement the project, 3 different assignments for students to use, and an answer key. ***THIS PRODUCT HAS BEEN UPDATED WITH A GOOGLE SLIDES INTERACTIVE VERSION INCLUDED. -- In “Pizza Place Combinations,” students will calculate the possible combinations of different pizzas based on the ingredients provided.

-- In “Layers of Lasagna,” students will calculate the possible permutations of different lasagna layers based on the ingredients provided. I have constructed these to all be permutation questions because when layering the lasagna, I am claiming the order does matter.

-- In “Your Own Pizzeria,” students will develop their own list of ingredients and construct specialty pizzas and lasagnas. They will need to determine the total number of options for each of their offerings and can design the menu if you’d like.
