In this resource, you will find 2 engaging place-value activities and 3 practice worksheets.

In the first activity, HOW MUCH ARE YOU WORTH?, students collect data on what they are wearing to find out how much they are "worth". On a code sheet, each item of clothing/accessory is given a price. Students have a great time seeing if they are "cheap" or "expensive"!

Skills included in the activities:

  • Identify the place value of whole numbers up to 1,000,000.
  • Read multi-digit whole numbers up to 1,000,000.
  • Add multi-digit whole numbers up to 1,000,000.
  • Compare multi-digit whole numbers up to 1,000,000.
  • Write multi-digit whole numbers in standard, expanded, and word form up to 1,000,000.
  • Round multi-digit whole numbers up to 1,000,000.
  • Multiply multi-digit whole numbers by a one-digit factor.

Included in the product:

  • Directions
  • Code sheet with prices for the clothing/accessories – color and b/w
  • Worksheet for students’ work
  • Example of the activity
  • List of questions to ask the students

Here are sample questions to ask the students during the activity:

  • Who has a 7 in the thousands place?
  • Does anyone have a number that has a place value ten times greater than another place value? ($235,668)
  • What is the value of the 8 in (student's name) number?
  • What is the difference between the most expensive student and the least expensive student?
  • What is (student’s name) number rounded to the nearest hundred dollars?

In the second activity (Part 2), students will use the information from the HOW MUCH ARE YOU WORTH? activity.

My 4th graders loved reviewing standard and expanded form by adding up all the clothing. They especially liked seeing how expensive their outfit for the day. The students were engaged the whole time. Thanks!
