Description

Place value is more than simply identifying digits! When we teach place value, we want our students to not only be able to identify values but to really understand what they mean and how they relate to one another. We want our students to think deeply about place value concepts so they can build strong number sense.

The problem with the average place value worksheets is that they do not take students to a place of deep thinking. Often, you will find worksheets that ask questions such as, "What digit is in the tens place? What is the value of this digit?" If students do well at answering these questions, we assume they understand place value. However, these questions are very surface-level and do not mean that a student has developed true understanding.

This package of place value slides is intended to be used as a teacher-led, whole-class place value talk. If you already have a number talk routine in place, this will fit nicely with your existing routine. Use the slides to guide your students through a series of tasks to help them make connections and see numbers in various ways.

For example:

  • Is 3 hundreds, 2 tens and 6 ones the same as 1 hundred, 20 tens, and 26 ones? How do you know?

  • Are there different ways to build the number 329?

  • How close is 187 to 200? How do you know?

These are the types of questions that students will grapple with. Let's help our students build number sense!

What's Included?

20 days of place value talks are included in this package. For each place value talk, 8-10 slides are included. Use all 8-10 slides in one day, or use them over a span of a couple days if your conversations are taking longer than expected.

The slides encourage students to think flexibly about multiple representations, values, and nearness. Incorporate manipulatives (or digital versions if you don't have the real ones available) to make this activity even more interactive.

Thinking deeply about numbers should be a daily activity, and it can be incorporated into everything that you do in your math class. I hope these slides will provide you with a foundation and ideas that you can use in many other areas of your math class as well.
