✈️ Plan a Class Vacation – Project-Based Learning Math Activity
This real-world PBL activity helps upper elementary students apply math skills in a fun, meaningful way by planning a dream vacation with four classmates! Students will research and budget, create an itinerary, and present their trip while practicing operations with decimals, financial literacy, and time management.
✅ What’s Included:
Page 1 – Pick Your Destination
Students choose a city and country to visit, research the location, and explain why they picked it.
Page 2 – Choose Your Travel Buddies
Students select 4 classmates to “travel with” and explain their choices. Includes fun reflection questions about their travel crew!
Page 3 – Transportation
Students research round-trip transportation, calculate per-person costs, and determine the total for 5 people.
Page 4 – Lodging
Students choose a hotel or Airbnb, calculate nightly rates, and determine total lodging costs for the group.
Page 5 – Meals
Students budget for breakfast, lunch, and dinner each day using multiplication and decimal operations.
Page 6 – Activities + Attractions
Students research fun things to do at their destination and calculate the cost of group activities.
Page 7 – Extras
Students estimate souvenir spending and set aside money for an emergency fund.
Page 8 – Total Budget
Students bring together all their calculations to check if they stayed under the $9,000 trip budget.
Page 9 – Daily Itinerary
Guided structure to help students plan each day of the trip, including meals, travel time, and activities.
Page 10 – Travel Agent Presentation Planner
Students choose between creating a brochure or a slides presentation. Includes a planning outline for each option.
Page 11 – Math Reflection Choice Board
Students choose 3 prompts to reflect on the math they used throughout the project (9 writing options included).
