Description

The Designed Earth: Penumbra’s Planetary Tuning Console — AI Earth Systems Simulation for Grades 7–12

A Branchpoint AI Simulations™ resource.

What this product is

A classroom-ready, AI-powered Earth systems simulation where students operate a planetary control console and attempt to “improve the Earth.”
Every adjustment—gravity, tilt, rotation, transparency, magnetic field strength, CO₂, distance from the Sun—triggers authentic scientific consequences, revealing how finely tuned Earth actually is.

The experience runs from one expertly structured master prompt you paste into your approved AI chatbot (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, etc.).
Students observe real-time system responses, make predictions, test hypotheses, and watch cascading climate, atmospheric, and habitability effects unfold through text, data, sensory cues, and TV news updates.

Instead of a passive lecture, students experience dynamic, simulation-driven Earth science.

Core science and skills students practice

  • Earth’s energy balance and greenhouse interactions
  • Hydrosphere stability, evaporation, albedo feedbacks
  • Magnetosphere function and atmospheric loss
  • Seasonal mechanics from axial tilt
  • Rotation, diurnal heating, and Coriolis-driven winds
  • Orbital distance & solar flux
  • Systems thinking: linking changes across Earth systems
  • Evidence-based reasoning: interpreting data tables, news impacts, and time-step evolution
  • Predicting long-term consequences using a structured Time-Step Engine

What’s included for teachers

  • Master Simulation Prompt
Built-in roles, difficulty levels, behavior filters, long-term physics, and a fully structured narrative environment.
  • Teacher Guide
Step-by-step setup, pacing options, classroom use strategies, and Earth-science debrief guidance.
  • Student Worksheets (Middle School Set, Grades 7–9)
Data logs, event trackers, time-step analyzers, reflection prompts, system maps, and end-state summaries.
  • Student Worksheets (High School Set, Grades 10–12)
Scientific data logs, CER reasoning sheets, cascading-effects analysis, threshold ranking, news-impact analysis, and a structured final debrief.
  • Cheat Sheet / Quick Reference
Parameter definitions, misconceptions guidance, and hints to support inquiry without giving answers.

All materials are editable for print or digital use.

How this helps teachers

  • Reduces planning time: Ready to launch in minutes; fits within 1–3 class periods.
  • Makes abstract Earth science concrete: Students see and feel planetary feedback loops, greenhouse effects, and orbital physics through in-simulation consequences.
  • Enhances engagement: Students control the simulation instead of completing static worksheets.
  • Strengthens NGSS alignment: Students analyze data, make claims, and construct explanations grounded in evidence.
  • Differentiation-friendly: Adjustable language levels and difficulty settings support struggling learners while still challenging advanced students.
  • Repeatable all year: Multiple unique collapse paths mean every run is different.

Specific value for middle-class educators

  • Delivers a premium, high-engagement Earth science experience using the devices students already have (Chromebooks + district-approved AI).
  • Requires no software subscriptions, no accounts, no downloads, and no lab equipment.
  • Provides a complete instructional package that works in resource-limited environments.
  • Helps you run sophisticated Earth systems modeling even in large or mixed-ability classrooms.
