Description
This two-week Poetry Boot Camp unit guides 9-10th grade students in analyzing poetry. These lessons are designed to make poetry analysis engaging by pairing poems with movie clips, TED-Ed videos, song lyrics, and other media. Furthermore, it reinforces student interpretation and analysis, rather than a find-the-only-right-answer approach. This unit contains 8 lessons, each based on a poetry skill. These skills are based on skills from the AP® English Lit CED, so they are great for new and future AP® Lit students. However, they are not exclusively reserved for Pre-AP and are perfect for emerging learners too!
⭐ What's Included in this Poetry Boot Camp for 9-10th grade
The focus of each lesson is:
- Diction & ambiguity
- Structure
- Imagery
- Characterization
- Literal & figurative language
- Personification
- Simile & Metaphor
- Allusion
Each lesson includes:
- an engaging warm-up activity
- poetry terms for student notes
- a poem analysis with discussion questions
- an exit slip activity
While this unit is customizable to your needs, the lessons as written focus on analyzing the following poems in class:
- "Theme for English B" by Langston Hughes
- "Crossing the Swamp" by Mary Oliver
- "Dulce Et Decorum Est" by Wilfred Owen
- "I Hear an Army" by James Joyce
- "Blackberry-Picking" by Seamus Heaney
- "I, Too" by Langston Hughes
- "Those Winter Sundays" by Robert Hayden
- "Baked Goods" by Aimee Nezhukumatathil
- "The Illiterate" by William Meredith
- "Caged Bird" by Maya Angelou
- "Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night" by Dylan Thomas
- "Cinderella" by Anne Sexton
