Description

This poetry unit bundle is a perfect no prep package to teach your students about different forms of poetry and figurative language. Poem forms are matched with a type of figurative language into two page mini-lessons in which students analyze the poem's form, a type of figurative language, and then practice creating their own!

This bundle weaves teaching figurative language with poetry exactly the way I do it in my own class.

Google Docs version. Editable and customizable. Assign directly through Google Classroom. Perfect for distance learning OR printable for in-person students.

This bundle includes:

  • Criteria for writing: rhyming couplets, limericks, haikus, cinquains, acrostic poems, diamantes, definition poems, and free verse poems
  • Definitions and examples for: simile, onomatopoeia, personification, hyperbole, alliteration, metaphor, and synecdoche
  • Strong example poems for each form
  • Higher-level vocabulary words in the example poems. Each worksheet also encourages students to use more vivid and precise vocabulary
  • Checklists for students to ensure they've met the assignment criteria and/or to assist teacher's with grading
  • Introductory notes on rhyme scheme, stanzas, forms, figurative language, and imagery
  • Fun poetic license for students to encourage creativity
  • Figurative language memory tiles for review game
  • Culminating assignment in which students invent their own form of poetry!
  • Retell a story as a poem activity
