Description
I put my students chairs 2 by 2 to form a train – they enter my room with a ticket, they sit on the train and we read the book. We do the various activities in the morning and after lunch we watch the movie. I push the tables and chairs to the sides of the classroom to make room for the pillows and blankets. We pause the movie after the Hot Chocolate song and go to our tables for cookies and hot cocoa (I also my cups with lids!). I start the movie once everyone is served. We also much on popcorn while laying on the floor. At the end of the day everyone gets a bell (Oriental Trading has some awesome big ones with tags that say “Believe” on them.) I cheat and do the Polar Express Writing train during the first week of December so that we can enjoy it the whole month long.

Pg. 5-7 Polar Express Day Tickets! – Send these home the night before with a note for your parents about the students wearing their pajamas the next day. I also let my students bring a stuffed animal, pillow, and blanket for the movie in the afternoon. These tickets can be printed back to back if you would like them to look real.

Pg. 20-22 Noun and Verb Polar Sort – cut, sort, and glue the nouns and verbs onto the correct side of the paper – enough noun and verb boxes for 2 students on each page
Pg. 23-25 My Trip on the Polar Express – copy page A and B back to back – a fun book that the students can respond in with writing and illustrations
Pg. 26 My Favorite Part of the Book – what was your favorite part of the BOOK – write a response and illustrate
Pg. 27- 29 ABC Order Train – cut on the dotted line and glue the train together – cut out the presents and glue them onto the train in alphabetical order – enough presents for two students
Pg. 30-34 Sequential Order Train and worksheet – copy the train on to cardstock and cut out – this can be laminated – put the train in sequential order with your class on the board – follow up with each student cutting and gluing the sequential order worksheet
Pg. 35-36 If the Polar Express came to your house in the middle of the night, would you get on it? – Collect data from 10 students, tally it, color it on a ten frame, and graph it
Pg. 37-43 My First Gift of Christmas Would Be … - What would you ask Santa for at the North Pole? Why? – copy the patterns onto various colored construction paper – copy the bow onto white construction paper and color it – glue the ribbon strips and the bow onto the front of the gift – put the writing paper between the front and the back of the gift and staple – this would make a cute bulletin board display with a big cut out Christmas tree- see example
Pg. 44- The Polar Express Trip Adjectives – have the students think of adjectives that would describe the trip on the train – I do this on the white board and then have them write their seven favorite adjectives on their papers – they then circle their two favorite adjectives and commit to using them in their writing
Pg. 45-65 Polar Express Train Writing and craft activity – I sell this separately as well in my store but you get this included with this packet. – this makes an awesome hall display – I let the students put their picture in whichever window they choose – see example on how it is put the train cars and train together – writing goes between the front of the train car and the backside of the train car
