Description

This resource is a low-prep activity perfect for morning work, end-of-year state test prep, or even assessment in geometry. This reviews some basic polygons that are covered in 3rd grade. Students write how many sides the shape has and write the name of the polygon using the provided word bank. This supports student independence and makes the practice more accessible for my English Language Learners or students with IEPs/disabilities.

Polygons included are:

  • Triangle
  • Rhombus
  • Rectangle
  • Octagon
  • Hexagon
  • Pentagon
  • Trapezoid
  • Square

This helped my students review concepts from 2nd grade and add on with 3rd grade learning. Geometry is something often skipped or missed in the curriculum at the end of the year, and this was the perfect addition to a mini-lesson on polygons.

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Understand that shapes in different categories (e.g., rhombuses, rectangles, and others) may share attributes (e.g., having four sides), and that the shared attributes can define a larger category (e.g., quadrilaterals). Recognize rhombuses, rectangles, and squares as examples of quadrilaterals, and draw examples of quadrilaterals that do not belong to any of these subcategories.
