  1. Find the double

Formula: a + b + c = total
4 Steps:

  1. Add the first two numbers
  2. Find the total
  3. Add the third number
  4. Write the final answer

Add Tens First

Formula: (a + b) = tens + ones
4 Steps:

  1. Look at the tens
  2. Add the tens first
  3. Add the ones
  4. Find the total

📝 Note: Adding tens first makes math easier.

Make a Ten

Formula: a + b = 10 + extra
4 Steps:

  1. Look for numbers that make 10
  2. Move numbers to make 10
  3. Add what is left
  4. Write the answer

📝 Note: Making 10 helps you add faster.

Add in Any Order (Commutative Property)

Formula: a + b = b + a
4 Steps:

  1. Look at both numbers
  2. Change the order
  3. Add the easier way
  4. Get the same answer

📝 Note: Addition order does not change the answer.

Group to Add (Associative Property)

Formula: (a + b) + c = a + (b + c)
4 Steps:

  1. Look at the numbers
  2. Group the easy ones
  3. Add the group
  4. Add the last number
