Description
In this no-prep activity, your students will make a thorough foray into the content and deeper implications of the Potsdam Declaration. Designed in a scaffolding manner, this activity allows your class to progress from basic document analysis techniques a historian might use to an analytical discussion of a larger historical context in which the Declaration was created.
To get the necessary background information, your students will first read through the background notes and then move on to reading the full text of the document itself. The Basics part of this lesson asks your students to independently identify the Author, Audience, Place, Time, Type, Purpose and Message of the Declaration. The Specifics part of the lesson is teacher guided. You will introduce your class to the four main parts of the Declaration (Inevitability of Japan’s Defeat, Terms of Surrender, Japan’s Post-War Future and Alternatives to Surrender) by projecting integral quotes from the document and asking your students to sort the main ideas of the quotes into appropriate columns of their graphic organizers. Lastly, the Big Questions section of this activity offers an earlier draft of the Declaration for comparison as well as a few guiding questions. Your students will be working with a partner to dive deeper into this analysis.
