With these digraphs and blends games and independent activities for Initial Consonant Blends and Digraphs, you can transform word study into a highly anticipated time of day for your students in the Letter Name-Alphabetic stage! This phonics activities and intervention bundle engages students in using pictures to help them identify and master the spelling of the single sound in beginning digraphs (ch, sh, th, and wh) and of the consonants in common beginning blends (st, sp, sk, sm, sc, sn, sw, pl, sl, bl, cr, cl, fr, fl, br, bl, gr, gl, pr, dr, tr, qu, and ).

The download for each sort includes a partner game and an independent game (that can also be modified to play with a partner). The partner games found in Unit 3 include Missing Letters board games. The independent activities found in Unit 3 include a Spin and Cover, a picture board and spinner activity. It is my hope that these activities help you increase student engagement and personal teaching joy during word study, spelling, or word work! In the Missing Letters board games, students take turns drawing picture cards and finding the ending/rime of the word on the path that matches the picture card drawn. Students mentally fill in the missing digraph or blend to find a spot to cover on the game board. ​Game play involves friendly competition and a recording sheet that makes it easy for the teacher to check that students understood the digraphs or blends of their particular game.

In the Spin and Cover activity (sorts 19-32), students choose a picture board from the 4 versions, spin for a beginning consonant, digraph, or blend and cover images of words that match the beginning consonant, digraph, or blend they spun. Students then record the beginning consonant, digraph, or blend of the word they covered.

I bought this to use with students who struggled with spelling digraphs on a spelling inventory. This was a nice center option.
