Description

Ready-to-print space board game is hilarious fun! Learn about planets, stars, gravity, asteroids, the solar system, craters, orbits, eclipses, astronomy history, seasons, and more. This space activity is perfect for an earth and space science unit.

The gorgeous board prints on 4 sheets of regular paper which can be taped, glued and/or laminated together. One hundred and twenty question cards are included which are fun and funny! Some cards ask kids to complete poems, idioms, jokes, and more in addition to standards-based astronomy questions. Differentiate learning by removing cards for topics that you're not teaching.

Print enough games for the entire class to play at the same time! Use for sub plans. There is a free video included which explains how to play the game. This game is GREAT for distance learning or remote learning; students can play at home with their families. Board games are a fantastic non-screen way to learn at home.

Included in this product:

  • game board
  • 120+ questions
  • mission location cards
  • mission complete cards
  • printable game die
  • simple instructions
  • a link to an online video explaining how to play (for kids who prefer to watch, rather than read, the instructions :))
  • all the question cards as a digital EASEL activity—these can be used for students to prepare to play the game and/or to assess their knowledge after playing
  • a 25-question, self-checking EASEL digital assessment which can be used either to prepare students for the game and/or to assess their knowledge after playing

This game directly helps with teaching the following concepts:

  • Develop and use a model of the Earth-sun-moon system to describe the cyclic patterns of lunar phases, eclipses of the sun and moon, and seasons.
  • Support an argument that the apparent brightness of the sun and stars is due to their relative distances from the Earth.
  • Develop and use a model to describe the role of gravity in the motions within galaxies and the solar system.
  • Use observations of the sun, moon, and stars to describe patterns that can be predicted.

The game is designed so that you can adjust the length of play depending on how much time is available. Questions are at a variety of levels. You can differentiate learning by playing only with the cards that apply to your student's level and/or what you are teaching.

Standards

NGSS5-ESS1-1
Support an argument that differences in the apparent brightness of the sun compared to other stars is due to their relative distances from Earth. Assessment is limited to relative distances, not sizes, of stars. Assessment does not include other factors that affect apparent brightness (such as stellar masses, age, stage).
NGSSMS-ESS1-2
Develop and use a model to describe the role of gravity in the motions within galaxies and the solar system. Emphasis for the model is on gravity as the force that holds together the solar system and Milky Way galaxy and controls orbital motions within them. Examples of models can be physical (such as the analogy of distance along a football field or computer visualizations of elliptical orbits) or conceptual (such as mathematical proportions relative to the size of familiar objects such as students’ school or state). Assessment does not include Kepler’s Laws of orbital motion or the apparent retrograde motion of the planets as viewed from Earth.
NGSSMS-ESS1-3
Analyze and interpret data to determine scale properties of objects in the solar system. Emphasis is on the analysis of data from Earth-based instruments, space-based telescopes, and spacecraft to determine similarities and differences among solar system objects. Examples of scale properties include the sizes of an object’s layers (such as crust and atmosphere), surface features (such as volcanoes), and orbital radius. Examples of data include statistical information, drawings and photographs, and models. Assessment does not include recalling facts about properties of the planets and other solar system bodies.
