Description

Probability with Permutations and Combinations Math Lib

Students will practice solving problems related to probability with permutations and combinations with this “Math Lib” activity. This activity was designed for a high school level class.

The answer to each station will give them a piece of a story (who, doing what, with who, where, when, etc.). This is a much more fun approach to multiple choice, and the students adore reading the story to the class. They get very excited to see which of their teachers is the "star" of the story.

EDIT ALL STORY ELEMENTS! All slides are given in an editable format so you are free to personalize the story for your students. PowerPoint is required to edit. Only story elements can be changed, not the actual problems.

Good upper-level probability resource. Like having the option to hang posters or use the Google Form.

Allowed me to check the understanding of my students, as well as as adding a fun self checking component to the math. A different math process than what was taught, but students understand even though the different teaching method.

Students had a great time with this but a few were challenging, which is good since this activity has various difficulty levels.

I used this resource as an activity to reinforce permutations and combinations. My students were engaged and felt more comfortable with the concepts when they were finished.

This was a nice trail run with comination/permutation combined with probability. Question 9 could be re-worded to make it easier for students to understand but... overall it was exactly what I needed. I do not think the answer to question 7 is correct. I think it is 2/23. There are 8 groups formed with a 1/92 chance in each one? Also... 1-chance of not the 2nd person would be 2/23.

Students enjoy the around the room feature. Some of the problems were difficult and need more than problems and notes in the statistic and probability unit. I love the challenge of good problems but also need a better explanation in the key.

Hi Tara! Did you use this with my Geometric Probability unit (Geometry Unit 12)? Sounds like you might not be using it with the correct unit. It directly goes with this particular unit if you’re looking for more examples :)

I loved the idea of this activity - but it wasn't exactly what I thought it would be. Many of the problems don't actually need combinations or permutations to find the probability, but my students really enjoyed it anyways.
