Description
Solving problems in more than one way, and using the CCSS Math Practices, is critical to our mathematical understanding. Knowing that there is always a different way to get to the end product is such a help to our students, taking the pressure off them to just memorize one correct way. However, teaching and encouraging our students to use more than one way to solve problems is something we don't always do.
In this pack, that is the goal. Your students will be given a problem (which has been aligned to go along with the Common Core State Standards for 5th grade) and are required to use two different strategies to get to the answer. They then will debrief the strategies as a whole class, seeing what their peers did, and learning even more strategies! The object is to make the students comfortable enough with math to see that there are two, three, four...or more ways to get to the end answer!
Included in the pack:
62 Common Core aligned problems in all 5 strands of the standards.
Problem strips to use and paste in notebooks (in case copies are an issue for you)
Each of the Common Core standards written out and ready to be displayed.
