Description
I created this to use with my students who rush through word problems in math. The idea is that each step of the bookmark is done with a different color - ideally a colored pencil but crayons or thin markers can be used as well. This forces students to go through each step and is also a motivator for my kiddos who love any excuse to use colored pencils!
The steps correlate with the problem solving steps in our math curriculum, which is Saxon Math.
These should be modeled (either whole class or in small groups) before students would be expected to use them independently. I have my struggling math students continue to use the colored pencils while many students do not need this scaffolding and just use their regular pencils to complete problems.
I keep a set of pencils for math time for these students that only includes the needed colors. I have them use their regular pencils for the white square (create a number sentence and solve the problem) so that they can erase if needed.
