Problem solving, writing in math, setting up word problems... None of these are easy for students. Introducing a brand-new strategy I crafted during my graduate school days – the UNDER strategy. This lesson is all about teaching students how to use the UNDER Mnemonic to become true problem-solving champions.

A Green Light Red Light Activity:
In this activity, students join forces in groups of four. Each student receives a unique word problem. When you signal "Green Light," they leap into action, following the UNDER strategy for the first part. And when you call out "Red Light," they take a pause. Students then pass the problem to the right and start the process again, but they should be on the next step of the process. It's teamwork in action!
Traditional Worksheets:
Part 1:
For problems 1 – 4, the teacher walks students through the process of the UNDER strategy.
For problems 5- 8, partners work together to solve the problems.
Part 2:
Four problems where students use the UNDER strategy. This would be good for independent work/homework.
A Content Literacy Piece:
Part 3:
Students write abou how to do the problem using the UNDER strategy, then solve it.
