Programming Secrets - Updated November 2021

This module will introduce students to common concepts that are common to all programming languages.

  1. Computers are exact and very picky. Spelling and punctuation matter.
  2. Write using comments in your native language.
  3. Programmers use variables.
  4. Languages use blocks of code -- functions/methods/subroutines
  5. Languages have pre-written code - API
  6. Languages use decision words - if/else, switch, for loops, and while loops
  7. Languages use data structures - ie arrays
  8. The print statement is the best debugging tool
  9. The breakpoint is the next best debugging tool
  10. Programming is an exact science and an art.

This module includes five formats:

1) SCORM version that can be uploaded to your LMS such as Canvas and Moodle

2) HTML version that can be uploaded to your website or LMS.

3) Microsoft Word

4) PDF

5) Video with narration and closed-captioning - Hosted on EduVision, an educational-safe video platform without tracking or ads.

Bonus: Two classroom activities included with this lesson.

I'm teaching an intro to programming class with kids of all levels of computer experience. Used this in class and all students seemed to get something out of it, especially the ones who've had trouble grasping some of the concepts we've discussed in the first couple weeks.
