🎉 Perfect Party Planners is a project based learning unit based all around preparing for the perfect class party! This resource contains a standards-based unit in both printable PDF and Google Slides versions - so it's the perfect activity to increase engagement and interest in the classroom or distance learning. Students follow instructions to pick a party theme (create a table, evaluate data), complete food planning (adding and subtracting money, multiplication and division problems), buy bottled water (multiplication, division, money word problems), buy paper plates (money problems), rent chairs (money problems), arrange tables (area models), plan activities (word problems), finalize plans (time), and take care of last-minute details (word problems). Additional "challenge activities" engage students and develop further understanding of the concepts and skills.

Standards Addressed:

  • 4.OA.A.3 Solve multistep word problems posed with whole numbers and have whole-number answers using the 4 operations, including problems with remainders.
  • 4.NBT.A.2 Read and write multi-digit whole numbers using base ten numerals.
  • 4.NBT.B.4 Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.
  • 4.NBT.B.5 Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number, and multiply two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations.
  • 4.NF.B.4 Apply and extend previous understanding of multiplication to multiply a fraction by a whole number.
  • 4.MD.A.1 Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units.
  • 4.MD.A.2 Use the 4 operations to solve word problems, including problems involving single fractions or decimals, and problems that require expressing measurements given in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Represent measurement quantities using diagrams such as a number line that feature a measurement scale.
  • 4.MD.A.3 Apply the area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in real world and mathematical problems.

🍕 Pizza Fractions is a project based learning unit based around preparing and serving pizzas based on appropriate situational fractions. This 4th grade resource contains a standards-based unit in both printable PDF and Google Slides versions - so it's the perfect activity to increase engagement and interest in the classroom or distance learning. Students follow instructions to identify equal pizza slices, partition pizzas into fractions, add toppings to pizzas to make fractions, and answer various story problems about fractions and their pizzas. Additional "challenge activities" engage students and develop further understanding of the concepts and skills.

Standards Addressed:

  • 4.OA.A.1 Interpret a multiplication equation as a comparison, e.g., interpret 35 = 5 × 7 as a statement that 35 is 5 times as many as 7 and 7 times as many as 5. Represent verbal statements of multiplicative comparisons as multiplication equations.
  • 4.OA.A.3 Solve multistep word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole-number answers using the 4 operations.
  • 4.NBT.B.4 Fluently add & subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.
  • 4.NBT.B.5 Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number, using strategies based on place value and properties of operations. Illustrate and explain by using equations, rectangular arrays, and area models.
  • 4.NF.A.1 Explain why a fraction a/b is equivalent to a fraction (nxa)/(nxb) by using visual fraction models.
  • 4.NF.A.2 Compare two fractions with different numerators and different denominators.
  • 4.NF.B.3.D Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions.
  • 4.NF.B.4.C Solve word problems involving multiplication of a fraction.
  • 4.MD.A.2 Use the four operations to solve word problems.
  • 4.MD.B.4 Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit. Solve problems involving the addition and subtraction of fractions.

🛒 Supermarket Spree is a project based learning task that involves using 4th grade math standards to budget, plan, and carry out a grocery shopping trip. Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units including km, m, cm; kg, g; lb, oz.; l, ml; hr, min, sec. Within a single system of measurement, express measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Record measurement equivalents in a two-column table. For example, know that 1 ft is 12 times as long as 1 in. Express the length of a 4 ft snake as 48 in. Generate a conversion table for feet and inches listing the number pairs (1, 12), (2, 24), (3, 36),...
Use the four operations to solve word problems involving distances, intervals of time, liquid volumes, masses of objects, and money, including problems involving simple fractions or decimals, and problems that require expressing measurements given in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Represent measurement quantities using diagrams such as number line diagrams that feature a measurement scale.
Apply the area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in real world and mathematical problems. For example, find the width of a rectangular room given the area of the flooring and the length, by viewing the area formula as a multiplication equation with an unknown factor.
