Description
This integrated unit is appropriate for the 1st nine weeks of school. It can extend to the 1st semester if need. There are several PowerPoints in this zip file: Addition Fact Families, Geometry Activities to do along with the unit. Place Value Mats, and Graphic Organizers. There are also links to online resources that will facilitate the teaching of the Community Unit. This is not a unit about community helpers. It is about establishing the concept of grade levels, and classrooms being communities. Students come to school and need to comprehend that they are now a part of the classroom community. grade level community, and school community. This is especially true for students who are in a charter school. These students have come from many communities to make up a brand new community. Very few of them will have friends from their neighborhood in the school. It is purposefully building a sense of pride in self and a sense of self-worth. This is the first step in becoming a viable member of the school community.

Love it
I thought the unit was on communities/community helpers.
The project is on communities. Whether home, school, or neighborhood. Community helpers could be a minute part of it. When K-2 students begin school they do not understand that they are now a part of a new community. That is the purpose of the unit.
