See More PBL Activities

This is a PBL that was created with 1st and 2nd graders in mind. It's simple enough to be completed independently, but some students might need extra support. All the prompts are open but guide the students towards the next step.

Students will first work on the research part of the project. There are multiple sheets that guide them through the process of research to record the information that they need to complete their projects.

At the end, they will have the opportunity for a STEM extension to build a ticket office. I have included a pattern that you can print and picture directions on how to do it. The kids can use the pattern or they can design and make their own. I recommend to let them design and think through the process of actually building as they envision their own design. I always provide my kids with: cardstock, posterboard, tape, glue, wooden sticks, etc. to use in their design.

Please, read the information about the activities carefully. If you have any questions just send me an email at teachwithpixels@gmail.com I'm happy to answer any questions ;-)

My student that I used this with is very hard to get engaged with day to day classroom activities. HE LOVED THIS! He was so engaged and excited about doing the research of where racetracks are and designing his racecar! Thank you so much!

Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 - 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
