Description

This project guides students through the process of a planning a party, using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, using real world word problems. Students will be able to choose food, decorations, and entertainment, while learning how to calculate and stick to a budget. This project is authentic and real-world based. It contains multi-step word problems that require critical thinking and strong mathematical skills. It is great for grades 4 and 5.

SUGGESTED USE:

  • Enrichment project for students who have mastered basic mathematical skills
  • Ongoing project for early finishers
  • End-of-year project for application of learned skills
  • Math station activity

Solve multistep word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole-number answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be interpreted. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding.
Write simple expressions that record calculations with numbers, and interpret numerical expressions without evaluating them. For example, express the calculation “add 8 and 7, then multiply by 2” as 2 × (8 + 7).
