Area and Perimeter (Design My House) – Students place furniture in a house & determine the area by estimating the squares remaining on the grid. Students also determine the perimeter related to their designs & answer questions related to area.

Geometry (Map Skills) – Students design and draw a map that will incorporate many mathematical concepts. They demonstrate an understanding of geometric terms and measurement.

Area and Perimeter (Design an Eco-Explorer Zoo) – Students work through a series of steps, including research, to design and build a model of their own ecosystem zoo! This project is perfect for integrating area, perimeter, geometry, and STEM learning in your classroom.

Fractions (Fraction Feast) - Students work through equivalent fractions, adding fractions with like denominators, or adding fractions with unlike denominators as they create "feast" plates and orders.

Perimeter (Fencing the Animals) - Students work through this real-life activity that involves placing animal crackers in "cages of toothpicks" and then finding various perimeters. Students will love being their own zookeeper!

Arrays and Distributive Property (Farm Animals) - Students create arrays, write equations, and decompose arrays with the distributive property as they build a farm for their animals.

Place Value Stats - Students work with place value by evaluating the places in numbers, writing out expanded form, and rounding numbers. Students also have to make decisions, defend their choices, and think strategically.

Build a Fence: Area and Perimeter Project-Based Learning Activity - Students calculate perimeter and area, determine the number of fence panels and posts needed, compare materials, analyze costs, stay within a budget, and defend their design decisions. With multiple project levels, students apply math skills in a meaningful, authentic way while developing critical thinking, reasoning, and communication skills.

Printing Notes:

While I recommend laminating materials for future use, it is not necessary. These materials print just fine in grayscale. I would suggest printing "as image" to avoid any potential issues.

Love the project nature of this. Used the zoo perimeter unit for math during our novel study of the ONe and Only Ivan and debating the ethics of zoos.
