This fun and engaging resource is a perfect way to introduce the process of Protein Synthesis and have students practice transcription and translation! This resource includes 6 DNA sequences that students will translate into mRNA and then using a coding chart will solve for hidden messages. This no-prep protein synthesis activity is interactive and helps with student comprehension.

Protein Synthesis Hidden Message Translation

Protein synthesis is a complex process consisting of two stages, transcription, and translation. This resource provides students with the opportunity to practice translating DNA into mRNA using complementary base pairing rules. Students then take the mRNA and use a coding chart to decipher hidden messages. This resource is designed to simulate DNA transcription into mRNA and the process of using a codon chart to translate mRNA into a protein.

This resource is perfect for introducing protein synthesis, for extra practice, small group collaboration, or independent work. This resource would be excellent as a sub-plan!

This activity was exactly what I was looking for as an introductory to transcribing and translating sequences, however, some of the hidden messages were a little cryptic lol.

I love the idea of the assignment and the layout, there are just quite a few errors. There are a few codons that code for more than one English word. Okay.. easy enough to let the kids know and have them problem solve which word makes sense for the phrase. (EX: There is codon GUU coding for both "Than" and "living".) We just told kids that there is more than one amino acid that each codon represents on a true codon chart, which is kind of backwards logic but it worked. Sequence 3 has an error that the code does not match the answer key, and unfortunately, I do not have access to just edit this document, or I would fix the errors myself. Love the idea, just keep a keen eye or find a way to edit before using. The kids liked the idea, it was a great day 1 confidence builder. I would just have to make a few edits before I use it next year.
