Description
Teachers, this is a fun but very messy project! I recommend students working in pairs, but if you don't have enough pumpkins, groups of 3 or 4 will work.
Project description: This is a self-guided project that the students will use past learned skills to complete. It will take parents donating pumpkins to the school; not every child will need a pumpkin. This is a great, fun activity that your students will enjoy. It doesn't have to be done on Halloween, but that's a great day to do this fun, chill project. There is no teaching so enjoy your day catching up on teacher things!
Prerequisite skills: using a measuring tape, circumstance, radius, diameter, fraction to decimal to percent, and ratios.
Pre-planning:
- 2 weeks before you do this project reach out the the parents to donate a Pumpkin to the class. Offer extra credit for each Pumpkin donated, or a free homework pass, whatever works best for your classroom. Find a spot in the back of your room because you will need 2:1 ratio of pumpkins to students.
- 1 week before you do the project start collecting other items. Butcher paper to cover the desks if available from your school or buy the $1.25 plastic table covers from the Dollar Tree. 5-6 bags of the cheapest baby wipes. 1-2 rolls of paper towels. 1 snack-size zip lock baggy per group.
- Day before: cut the tops of the pumpkins off and then put them back on the pumpkins. Put the desks in groups of 4. (Two groups per table is absolutely fine!) Lay the table cover on top. Put one package of wipes at each table group.
- Morning of: make copies for each student to have their own sheet. Put paper towels, tape, zip-lock baggies, blank sheets of paper and measuring tape on your desk.
