Description
Help students understand population dynamics better with this Quadrat sampling lab! In this activity, students will collect a sample and estimate the total number of blades of grass and total number of weeds in each area.
Teach them the skills needed to estimate population size and density using quadrats (don't have quadrats? Go get some hula-hoops and tie string in squares through the insides - surprisingly close in dimensions).
You can choose to Adapt the lab even further by using poker chips or another item (to simulate animals) and a table cloth. When students throw the quadrat or hula hoop at the "animals" on the table cloth, the impact will generate air underneath causing the animals to move. Or you can choose to delete that section for lack of supplies/time.
