Race Strategy Constructed Response Questions and Writing Prompts With Passage

Teach your students to write a perfect constructed response for any ELA state test with this workshop using the r.a.c.e + transitions method. This workshop includes a reading passage and a sample response, and can also be used year around with any passages.

PRODUCTS INCLUDED:

1-Digital Workshop--Specifically designed for Google Classroom or any other LMS.

2-Printable Workshop-- Some students work better with paper. You can meet their needs too!

3-Evaluation/Grading/Feedback Tool--This is tool you didn't know you had to have. Give excellent feedback by putting the corresponding number on their rubric. Feedback is specific to the mistakes most all students make and to the rubric requirements. After teaching this skill for 14 years, I decided to curate the feedback I was giving repeatedly and reuse. No more writing the same feedback over and over! Best part, students will actually use it to make revisions because it's clear and simple to understand. Also, students can use this tool for peer evaluation. This makes learning considerably faster and more efficient.

Here's how to use the workshop (digital and printable):

  • Students learn to unpack the prompt by analyzing, highlighting, and defining its language, especially the academic language that will likely show up on state tests.
  • Students will learn to restate and answer ALL parts of the question by paraphrasing each question asked in the multi-question prompt.
  • Students will learn to use transition into their evidence by selecting appropriate transitions (given) for their purpose. They will also learn to transition into their elaboration.
  • Students will learn to provide and cite (in-text) strong supporting evidence, and elaborate upon that evidence.
  • Students will learn to ensure quoted evidence is no more than 25-30% of text. (important for state tests)

Teaching method suggestion:

Analyze the mentor sample prompt and response as a whole class. Each piece of the sample is broken down just as students will do with their own.

Allow students to work at their own pace, re-reading the passage, and unpacking and constructing their prompt.

INCLUDED:

  • Professionally written informational passage about a lion, named P-45, facing habit destruction. (published author J.C. Anderson)
  • Multi-step prompt for the passage
  • Dissected prompt with mentor responses
  • Graphic organizers and instructions for each step
  • Rubric for teacher and peer evaluation
  • Rubric with descriptors
  • TEMPLATES for ALL of your future constructed response assignments

FORMAT AND USER INFORMATION: This resource has 3 formats:

PowerPoint, Google Slides, and PDF. If you are not a Google Classroom user, there are other options for using this resource! You can project it onto a board for whole class instruction, modeling and discussion, or you can share it on just about any LMS. I was trying to introduce the RACE Strategy. The "T" is not necessary until students are comfortable with the strategy. Unfortunately, I could not adapt this for my needs.

I am sorry to hear this didn’t work for you. You might consider skipping the transition section if your students aren’t ready for it. Including transitions in writing is a standard for these grade levels and a feature that I consider to be important for teaching students to write cohesively. This resource is designed to teach the complete process of writing a constructed response that will ensure students earn all possible points on their state test. Thank you for your review.
