Description
This is an excellent project that your students can do over the Spring and Winter breaks. They can also be done in school. It's a great way to show the growth your students have made throughout the year, and they absolutely love having the freedom to choose their own assignment!
This is called a RAFT project. R (role) A (audience) F (format) T (topic). RAFT is a writing strategy that helps students understand their role as a writer. It encourages them to uncover their own voice by presenting their ideas in various formats.
This is also a way to differentiate your assignment. It truly plays to your students strengths. They can be super creative with the role and audience that they choose. For example, in the winter they could be a snowflake writing to a child about a snowstorm that's on the way. Or they could write a grocery list for Thanksgiving dinner.
