Description

Why not integrate Reading and Math in honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday? Use these math skills task cards as part of your READ ACROSS AMERICA celebration! Or use these cards as a fun way to review 1st grade math skills any time, but especially before standardized testing. Use them in your math center, during small group work, or use them one at a time with your whole class. A Student Recording Sheet is included so students can record their answers for each card. I always have my students use scratch paper to work the problems, and then transfer their answer to the recording sheet (See Preview). Teacher Answer Key is provided.

Simply print out the cards, cut, and laminate. I mount each card on to cardstock or construction paper before laminating, to make them extra sturdy. Store them either in a basket or plastic baggie, or hole punch each card and store on a binder ring for easy access. This particular set of task cards is a bit larger which makes the text easy to read, and easier for little hands to hold. For that reason, I store card sets like these in a two-pocket folder along with the Student Recording Sheets.

Included are:

o 24 Task Cards

o Student Recording Sheet

o Teacher Answer Key

Cards address the following skills:

o Add and subtract within 20

o Add two-digit numbers with and without regrouping

o Working with addition and subtraction equations

o Use models to add tens and one

o Comparing two-digit numbers

o Using ten frames

o Tally Marks

o Ordinal Numbers

o Skip Counting

o Extending a Pattern

o Interpreting data

o Telling time to the hour and half-hour using analog clocks

o Solving word problems using addition and subtraction

o Determine too much information in a word problem

One option is to simply print out the cards and Student Recording Sheet in grayscale, and provide them to students as a "packet" to be worked on throughout the day as a "When You're Finished" project. Of course, task cards like these just "cry out" for a game of SCOOT! This way, students can be working on both reading and math skills throughout your READ ACROSS AMERICA or Dr. Seuss Celebration Day!

These task cards can be used as traditional task cards or can be uploaded to either Schoology or Google Slides. It’s an easy way to incorporate technology into your math block. Have students access the task cards through either Schoology or Google slides, print out the recording sheets, and have them handy for whenever or however you choose to use them. No prep necessary, answer key included.

Another fun way to use these cards is to set up a Scavenger Hunt! My students love scavenger hunts of any kind! Students attach their Recording Sheet to clipboards, and the fun begins! Cards are hidden around the classroom, and students must search the room to find all twenty-four cards to correctly use their math skills to solve the problems. Cards are "hidden" around the room "in plain sight." All cards are located within a child's eye view, so it's not necessary for students to handle the cards. Of course, depending on your class, you might want to hide them in a few more challenging areas! Complete the Scavenger Hunt during a designated time block, or as a "When You're Finished" Activity. No Color Printer? No Problem! Students have just as much fun completing the Scavenger Hunt if the cards are printed in grayscale. In fact, printing them in grayscale makes them just a bit more difficult to find during the hunt! Saves a lot of ink, too!

Several grade levels are listed, to assist with differentiating your skill work. The same cards can be used for accelerated, on level, or below level students based on grade level.
