🌈✨ Rainbow STEM – Exploring Light & Color
A Hands-On Science & Engineering Challenge (Grades 3–9)

Bring the science of light to life with this engaging, hands-on STEM challenge where students explore how white light separates into a rainbow! In this interactive investigation, learners design and build a working model or experiment that demonstrates how light bends and forms a spectrum.

This resource guides students step-by-step through the Engineering Design Process while building a deep understanding of refraction, wavelengths, and the color spectrum.

🌈 The Challenge

Students are tasked with creating a working demonstration that shows how white light splits into visible colors. They investigate how rainbows form when light bends (refraction) through water or a prism and spreads into a spectrum.

Through experimentation, students explore:

  • Refraction (bending of light)
  • Spectrum (band of colors)
  • Wavelength (size of a light wave)
  • How rainbows form in nature

🔬 What’s Included (14 Pages):

✔ Introduction & Challenge Page
✔ Explanation of How Rainbows Form (with vocabulary)
✔ Color Spectrum activity (write rainbow colors in order + bonus wavelength question)
✔ Investigation Planning page (hypothesis + variables)
✔ Materials checklist (flashlight, prism, water, CD, spray bottle, etc.)
✔ Design Requirements checklist
✔ Imagine page (draw 2 possible designs)
✔ Plan Your Model blueprint page
✔ Build checklist & reflection questions
✔ Test & Record data table (trials, colors seen, brightness scale)
✔ Improve & redesign reflection
✔ STEM Connection page (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math links)

🛠 Experiment Options Include:

  • Prism investigation
  • Water spray rainbow
  • CD light reflection
  • Glass of water + flashlight setup

Students test different methods, compare brightness levels, record observations, and improve their designs.

🧠 Skills Students Practice:

  • Scientific inquiry & hypothesis writing
  • Engineering design process
  • Data collection and analysis
  • Measuring angles (advanced option)
  • Observation and critical thinking
  • Problem-solving and reflection

🔗 STEM Connections:

  • Science: Light refraction & wavelengths
  • Technology: Fiber optics and light signals
  • Engineering: Designing lenses and prisms
  • Math: Measuring angles and comparing brightness

✅ Perfect For:

  • Light & optics units
  • Physics lessons
  • STEM labs
  • Science fair projects
  • Upper elementary & middle school classrooms
  • Hands-on enrichment activities

Make light visible and learning unforgettable with this exciting Rainbow STEM engineering challenge! 🌞🌈
