Rainy Day Math Mystery Activity - 3rd Grade Math Worksheets Edition

The Case of the Never-Ending Rain

This Math Mystery game is a fun way to practice and review math skills during a rainy day at school. Easy prep! Just Print & Solve! Or go paperless with the new Google Slides option provided within your download.

Students must use their math skills to unlock clues. Then, use their powers of deduction to narrow down the solutions to fix the Weather Control Board that is stuck on the 'rain' setting.

⭐A video hook is provided to set the stage to engage! Check out the video hook in the preview section.

⭐A bonus ENDING VIDEO clip is included to celebrate finishing the mystery.

Preparation

>> Print, copy, and solve!

Or

>> Make a copy of the Google Slides provided and assign to your students via Google Classroom

Math Skills included in this Math Mystery

There are five clues to crack to solve the mystery:

Clue 1: Addition within 1,000 (with and without regrouping)

Clue 2: Word Problems (Add & Subtract within 1,000)

Clue 3: Read and interpret a Pictograph

Clue 4: Identify 2D shapes and some 3D shapes (more 3D shapes than 2D)

Clue 5: Subtraction within 1,000 (with and without regrouping)

>> Students must use critical thinking skills to figure out what the clue is telling them to eliminate from the list of possibilities. Ensure students read and comprehend clues carefully!

Also included:

  • Answer key
  • Printable awards
  • Introduction and ending videos
  • Student worksheet pages in Google slides

Distance Learning: There's a Word Document within the folder that contains a link to share this resource with your students via Google Classroom or Drive using Google Slides. Parts of the pages are editable so that your students can complete them without having to print the pages. Please note, that you will need to make a copy of the Google Slides to your drive before you can edit.

Implementation Suggestion: Pace the clues one by one to keep the class at the same point. If using the clues in a different order, keep the list of the possible solutions away from students until all five clues are completed and discovered.

------------------------------------------------------------
Multiple Uses
- Suitable for independent, pairs, or group work.
- Use as part of your math centers, add to your sub tubs, make it part of your early finisher tasks, give for homework, or make it part of your classroom practice/review sessions.
I recommend pacing this activity by giving students one clue at a time. Once the whole class has completed a clue, then move on to the next clue either within the same lesson or the next math session. New math content presented? Make a lesson out of it by modeling the math before diving into the clue. I like to say, "We must learn something new before attempting the next clue."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How long will this activity take?
The time to complete will vary anywhere between 30mins - 2 hours or more! It mainly depends on how familiar your students are with the math mystery format, as well as how difficult they find math skills covered in the particular mystery. Please check the math skills outlined in the clues above to help determine suitability for your class

Great value
I absolutely love these Math Mysteries, and this rainy day theme was a huge hit with my 3rd graders! The mystery format keeps students engaged from beginning to end, and they don't even realize how much math practice they're getting. I especially loved how the clues reviewed multiple skills in one activity—addition, subtraction, word problems, pictographs, and shapes. The video hook immediately grabbed their attention, and the ending video made them feel so accomplished. My students were excited, focused, and working hard to solve the case. These mysteries have become one of my favorite ways to review skills while keeping learning fun. Highly recommend! ?️?➕?⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ As a 3rd-grade math teacher, I own many of these mysteries, and they never disappoint. Easy prep, high engagement, and meaningful practice every time! ❤️
