Description
This series was designed based on an in depth analysis of 4th - 8th grade released test questions over several years. A comprehensive and sequential instructional plan emerged that provides a guide to developing rigorous real world problem solving skills along with mastery of essential skills involving proper and improper fractions, mixed numbers, decimals, percents, graphing, and proportions. The 14 levels of task cards progress in rigor from simple one step problems to rigorous multi step problems. They have been used to successfully prepare even struggling students for the difficult state assessment tests.
Content includes 28 problem solving task cards, 2 cards per level. Problem on one side and step by step problem solving directions on the other. Most cards contain real world problem solving tasks, however, isolated essential skills are also included to ensue that struggling learners get the reteach and practice needed for mastery.
These review cards make great math centers, differentiated instructional support, reference notes, homework practice, and homework support. Students are able to work problems independently and receive immediate feedback as to their accuracy.
Additionally, task cards provide parents an effective and structured approach to home study. I have received lot of support from parents that are grateful for a learning tool that they can use at home.
Instructional Skills, Concepts, and Problem Solving Applications Include:
* Converting mixed numbers to improper fractions
* Ordering fractions and mixed numbers
* Analyzing data statements involving fractions and mixed numbers
* Converting Improper fractions to mixed numbers
* Identifying models that represent improper fractions
* Converting decimals to percent
* Converting percentages to simplified fractions and decimals
* Draw and label number lines containing positive rational numbers
* Draw and label number lines containing positive and negative rational numbers
* Analyze date and solve problems involving percentages
* Use proportions to find unknown quantities of rational numbers
* Use diagrams to sort acategorize rational numbers
* Analyze complex rational number data statements for accuracy
These review cards are part of a larger set of materials also available for purchase on this site. See descriptions of additional materials below.
* Problem Solving Task Cards: These cards were initially developed to provide an effective self paced approach to remediation specific to each student's needs. Students are able to work problems independently and receive immediate feedback as to their accuracy. These materials have been highly effective because they take little or no time away from my regular class instruction but provide effective individualized remediation either as part of a classroom center or a tutoring program.
After having received a lesson specific to each level, students work problems and check their answers which are on the back of each card. If student learns an answer is not correct they can reference their Fraction Review Cards for a quick independent reteach. After a student has independently gotten 3 or 4 problems correct without needing a reteach, he/she can request testing out which should occur the next day / session. (testing out on the same day does not demonstrate mastery)
18 cards per level
(recommend printing levels on a different colored card stock and laminating)
Levels 1 - 14 Fraction Problem Solving Task Cards address commonly tested problems that assess Identifying Fractional Parts, simplifying fractions, fractional number lines, converting to decimals, comparing and ordering fraction and decimals, equivalent fractions, proportions, and related rigorous real world problem solving applications.
Levels 15 - 28 Rational Number Problem Solving Task Cards address commonly
tested problems that assess classifying, converting, comparing, ordering, graphing, analyzing data, and related rigorous real world problem solving applications. Emphasis is on mastery of skills, concepts, and applications related to relationships between proper and improper fractions, decimals, mixed numbers, and percentages,
Levels 29 - 42 Fraction and Rational Number Computation Task Cards address commonly tested problems that assess addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division skills and their related real world problem solving applications.
note: This level is still undergoing final editing so not all levels are available at this time
* Problem Solving Mini Lessons break problem solving down into manageable chunks for struggling learners while teaching them to apply problem solving skills. Additionally, they higher levels take learning to challenging levels for more advanced students.
Each worksheet comes with simplified notes on the left column that the students can easily reference while working. Contents include worksheets specific to each problem solving level, allowing multiple practice and individualized homework as well as mixed practice work-sheets.
These materials have proven to be an effective tool when modifying lessons for remedial students and providing mandated IEP modifications as they provide comprehensive and sequential remediation of skills, concepts, and problem solving applications.
