Description

These six tasks on ratios and proportions are open-ended allowing students to use whichever methods that are in their toolboxes. Some strategies to highlight: reasoning multiplicatively, double number line, tape diagram, ratio tables, unit rate, solving proportions (equations), cross multiplying. Ratios and proportional reasoning are huge in 6th and 7th grade, respectively, and establish the foundation for advanced reasoning in higher grades. The common misconception students make is thinking additively in situations that require multiplicitave reasoning. Use these tasks to help advance your students' proportional reasoning!

The tasks build on each other and increase in complexity i.e. with mixed numbers towards the end.

For a free Desmos activity, not created by me but that you may find fun and useful, here is a link: https://teacher.desmos.com/tilepile It is called Tile Pile and connects to my proportional reasoning product.

Consider using Pair Deck so that your students can engage in the problem solving while you facilitate and monitor in real-time.

Teacher notes are provided.

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Understand the concept of a ratio and use ratio language to describe a ratio relationship between two quantities. For example, “The ratio of wings to beaks in the bird house at the zoo was 2:1, because for every 2 wings there was 1 beak.” “For every vote candidate A received, candidate C received nearly three votes.”
Understand the concept of a unit rate 𝘢/𝘣 associated with a ratio 𝘢:𝘣 with 𝘣 ≠ 0, and use rate language in the context of a ratio relationship. For example, “This recipe has a ratio of 3 cups of flour to 4 cups of sugar, so there is 3/4 cup of flour for each cup of sugar.” “We paid $75 for 15 hamburgers, which is a rate of $5 per hamburger.”
Use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems, e.g., by reasoning about tables of equivalent ratios, tape diagrams, double number line diagrams, or equations.
