Description

Bring your Ratios, Rates, and Proportions unit to life with an engaging, real-world pizza recipe performance task!

Are you looking for an authentic way to assess how well your students can apply proportional reasoning to everyday scenarios? This project-based math activity challenges students to scale up a standard pizza recipe, calculate required grocery quantities, and navigate real-world purchasing constraints.

Students quickly realize that grocery stores don't sell fractional ingredients—if a scaled recipe calls for 1/4 jars of pizza sauce, they'll have to use their critical thinking and math skills to round up and purchase 2 full jars, calculating the final costs accordingly.

With two complete versions included, this resource is incredibly easy to differentiate across multiple grade levels.

🍕 Project Breakdown & Student Tasks:

  • Skill Practice: Complete 6 foundational review problems involving equivalent ratios and rates.
  • Recipe Conversion: Scale a pizza recipe using fractional parts, equivalent ratios, and proportions to feed a larger crowd.
  • Unit Price Comparison: Calculate and compare unit rates to find the most cost-effective ingredients.
  • Real-World Budgeting: Use standard arithmetic to determine final grocery bills, accounting for whole-package purchasing constraints.
  • Extension Challenge: An included extension problem to push your early finishers and higher-level thinkers.

❤️ This Resource is Perfect For:

  • Upper Elementary & Middle School Math Classes (Grades 4–8)
  • Pre-Algebra Units on Ratios, Rates, and Proportions
  • Upper-Level Elementary Enrichment or Middle School Remediation
  • End-of-Unit Summative Assessments or Performance Tasks

📦 What’s Included:

  • 6 Foundational Review Problems (1 Page): To ensure students have the prerequisite skills before starting the project.
  • Pizza Recipe Application Questions (2 Pages): 5 multi-step questions guiding students through the recipe scaling and grocery store math.
  • Advanced Extension Problem: Perfect for extra credit or differentiation.
  • 2 Complete Versions of Everything: Two distinct layout or difficulty options to easily differentiate for your students.
  • Complete Teacher Answer Key: Full solutions included for quick and easy grading.
  • Terms of Use

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Understand the concept of a ratio and use ratio language to describe a ratio relationship between two quantities. For example, “The ratio of wings to beaks in the bird house at the zoo was 2:1, because for every 2 wings there was 1 beak.” “For every vote candidate A received, candidate C received nearly three votes.”
Understand the concept of a unit rate 𝘢/𝘣 associated with a ratio 𝘢:𝘣 with 𝘣 ≠ 0, and use rate language in the context of a ratio relationship. For example, “This recipe has a ratio of 3 cups of flour to 4 cups of sugar, so there is 3/4 cup of flour for each cup of sugar.” “We paid $75 for 15 hamburgers, which is a rate of $5 per hamburger.”
Use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems, e.g., by reasoning about tables of equivalent ratios, tape diagrams, double number line diagrams, or equations.
