This fun and easy Reading Journal is the perfect way for your child or student to track their reading journey! Beyond that, this Reading Journal is something you can use yourself. I started keeping one earlier this year and it has encouraged me to read more. I also really like the fact that I’m able to look back and reference an author I enjoyed or a title that I want to recommend to a friend.

This reading journal also works very well as a summer reading log to encourage students to keep reading over the summer. Need some evidence that summer reading is important and worthwhile? A recent study of children in 3rd to 5th grades showed that students lost about 20% of their school-year reading gains during a single summer break of not reading. This can have a snowball effect as they experience subsequent skill loss each year and these losses add up over time. The good news is that kids who read over the summer actually make small gains over time. As a result, studies have shown that students who consistently read in the summer perform as much as 40% better on reading achievement tests than those who don’t. Beat the “Summer Slide” with this Reading Journal!
Technical Details:
- For best results, make sure your printer is set to the highest quality printing (this is usually not the default setting).
- I always recommend printing a test page before you print the whole journal.
- Please be aware that most printers will add a small white border around the design on each page. You may be able to eliminate this border by finding out how to do “borderless printing” on your printer model, but it’s not an option on all printers. I personally think it looks nice with the border, but that’s just personal preference.
- If you find that you prefer a smaller journal (half the size of the original), try going to your printer settings a selecting the 2 pages per sheet option. You can then cut these pages in half to create a “mini journal”!
- Make it your own and enjoy!
