Description

Character analysis, specifically minor characters, is a vital component of any middle school reading instruction. Reading workshop-style mini-lessons are key to teaching reading strategies and skills such as this. Use this mini-lesson to briefly but explicitly teach important concepts on the role of minor characters. The clear and concise information will give kids a focus before reading independently.

This mini-lesson works for any type of fiction.

There is also an identical version of this product available to download from a PDF if you do not want TPT to access your Google Drive.

Each one of my mini-lessons includes:

✅engaging information that kids can relate to

✅a clear objective, stated outright for students

✅clear, direct instruction

✅examples to guide students

✅a “turn and talk” component

✅clear directions as to what to do when heading off to work independently

✅editable portions on some slides so that you can add your own ideas

✅a blank, formatted slide so that you can add any additional information that you’d like

Here is what I recommend:

⭐️Make any changes on the editable portions, as well as adding any information of your own by using the blank slide.

⭐️Assign to your digital learning platform so that kids can refer to it, but project and go over the lesson as a class.

⭐️Although this is a digital format, you can print it. I would recommend going to "print preview" to select the number of slides you'd like per page.

⭐️Partner or group your students so they have someone with whom they can discuss during the “turn and talk” portions.  I keep the same partners the same throughout the unit.

⭐️Aim to keep your mini-lessons at about 10-15 minutes long; the point of a mini-lesson is to get kids reading and writing, not to just listen to info about reading and writing!

⭐️Aside from the “turn and talk” portion, the mini-lesson is led by the teacher. Keep the questions and anecdotes to a minimum until the students are asked to share.

There is a video preview on this listing that explains how mini-lessons work with some tips for you that I think you will find helpful.   Be sure to check it out; it contains audio so pump up the volume!

Enjoy!
