Reading Rocks! is a program designed to encourage students to read outside of school. The students each receive a calendar and are instructed to have his/her parents write how many minutes he/she reads each night. At school, the teacher will check the calendar and the students will put up a sticker on the sticker chart for every 10 minutes he/she reads. After about every 90 minutes, the student will receive a reward based on what color bar they reached on the sticker chart. This program was created because I needed a way to get my STUDENTS excited about reading at home. I had zero success getting my students to read simply because I told them it was homework...they needed to WANT to read. This program has accomplished that goal! With this program, my students are now reading an average of 2,000 minutes (each!) for each 3 month term!
