ABC Notes is my own version of ABC pre-reading activities. I loved the activity to engage background knowledge; but I wanted something that could be used throughout a lesson or unit, not just at the beginning, so I started using ABC charts to create notes and actively engage readers.
Reading Strategies for Informational Text is a series comprised of tried and true reading strategies. This set includes 3 versions of the ABC Notes page, and 2 versions of reading response pages. Teachers can print any configuration of the organizers as they wish.
ABC Notes is a strategy that can easily be used across subject areas. This activity can be used to help students actively read text books, articles, and other nonfiction text. While completing ABC Notes, students stay actively engaged as they look closely at the information and cite evidence as they go.
The steps are simple:
1. Record what text is assigned
2. Complete each box by identifying topic specific vocabulary, important people and places, or specific actions/events/processes in the text that begin with that letter.
This activity is a very simple one to teach, but has several benefits. Once it is taught, it can be used repeatedly to engage with texts across subject areas; as well as to provide organized notes for recall and study.
