Description
Introduce integers by having students translate real-world scenarios into positive, negative, or zero values. Students will read 55 short situations including words like deposit, withdrawal, increase, decrease, above, below, debt, sea level, discount, descend, and more. Each of these situations corresponds to an integer. These scenarios will prepare students for later word problems involving integers.
This product is a Google Docs file and is 100% editable. It includes 55 scenarios and an answer key. It can also be assigned to students via Google Classroom for distance learning.
How to Use this Resource for Distance Learning with Google Classroom:
- Make sure you are signed into the Google account associated with your Google Classroom (usually your school account).
- Add the resource to your Google Drive (TPT will do this automatically when you purchase).
- Open Google Classroom.
- Click on “Classwork.”
- Click on “Create > Assignment.”
- Click on “Add” (looks like a paper clip) and select “Google Drive.”
- Choose the file and select “Add.”
- The file will default to “Students can view file.” Click the dropdown menu and select “Make a copy for each student.”
- Add a title, instructions, points, due date, etc.
- Click “Assign.”
Click "View Preview" to preview page 1 of the product.

In my classroom, I turned this activity into a Connect Four game [example]. Once they correctly solved a horizontal row of problems, they earned a turn! If you want to do it this way, you will need a different color of Post-it notes for each team. I've never seen students more excited to correct their errors!
