What others say

"I can't count how many times I hear students say "but when will we use this in the real world"! This is a great activity to address that commonly asked question!"

Description

Get ahead of one of the most common questions your students will ask with this fun math interview activity. This mini project gives students an opportunity to find out how math is used in the real world while getting the parents and guardians involved. A fun project that can be turned into a year-long display.

Students will have fun interviewing an adult in their life about how math is used in that adult's occupation. We all know every job from the stay-at-home mom to the CEO of a large company uses math. Students will discover that for themselves while creating a social media post.

With this activity you get:

  • Two sets of directions to choose from
  • Four different editable rubrics to choose from
  • Two different-sized phone templates
  • Letters to create a bulletin board display

Your students will have fun answering that common question, "When will we ever use this" without even realizing they are answering it. They will be engaged in real-world math, art, and creativity while creating a social media post that even includes hashtags.

Display your students' amazing creations to have a year-long bulletin board.

Prep is quick and easy...Just choose your rubric and phone size. You are ready to print and have fun.

An example is included to share with your students or to inspire you to make your own example.

Students were quite engaged with this assignment. They all came back talking about their parents' jobs and I hope they had a little more respect for what they do. I think it was great way for them to understand that Math is every where. Many had their eyes opened to this concept. Thank you for the great idea!

My students loved interviewing their family members and then had a great time sharing with their peers. I had this on display for Open House night.
