"We had some visits from the SPCA and this resource went well with their presentation! Eellent buy in from students as it was very fun and applicable to real life!"

Description

One of my favorite things to do is show kids how what they learn in school matters in the real world! Students will use critical thinking, research, problem solving, and math skills to complete this project.

Kids are always talking about wanting pets and this project will help them think about everything that goes into adopting a new furry family member! This would work great for an extension, real world math center, or as a whole group or partner project.

MATH SKILLS USED
* Decimals and money
* Rounding (if they round to the nearest dollar)
* Computation (addition and subtraction)
* Word problems and problem solving

My students, as probably most, love animals. This was a project they got to work on when classroom work was done. They learned budgeting, planning, responsible internet browsing, research, and animal care. 5th grade students were able to work on it independently.

My students loved this resource! It had my students who are not typically engaged in math, asking to work on this project. It was also very easy to differentiate, and students at all levels had little difficulty with it.

I converted this into digital worksheets so we can work online. I used it with struggling students who generally hate math, but this was HIGHLY motivating. It kept my students engaged and they had fun while working on math, research, and writing skills.
