Description
This climate-change-themed problem-based learning curriculum mini-bundle includes four resources, all of which take the approach of looking at the climate change problem, exploring solutions, and acting on those solutions.
Project Overview:
- Each student or small group of students will explore carbon cycle disruptors and develop a hypothetical plan that restores the balance of the carbon cycle.
- They will then take a self-directed project-based learning approach to study greenhouse gases.
- Students will use new knowledge about greenhouse gases to examine the consequences of emissions on global communities and develop another hypothetical plan to solve the problem from a variety of angles and perspectives.
- Finally, students use what they've learned about carbon disruptors, greenhouse gases, and the impacts of emissions on the global community to develop a community action project that focuses on our climate future.
Why Use The Resources in this Bundle:
These resources, when used together, help learners look at the issue of climate change from a science-based, proactive, solutions-based approach.
The resources teach 21st-century skills such as problem-solving in addition to content knowledge. The community service and leadership elements make this experience an awesome high school resume builder as well.
BUNDLE INCLUDES:
Bundle Part 1 - Greenhouse Gases Self-Directed Project-Based Learning: Students learn about different greenhouse gases and their impacts. Each student chooses a greenhouse gas to explore and designs a PBL experience around that gas.
- Teacher and student guides
- Introductory activity
- Greenhouse effect background information
- Project-based learning checklist
- Project planner
- Research guide
- "Challenge Yourself" extension options
- Project rubric
- Project reflection guide
Bundle Part 2 - Carbon Disruptors Problem-Based Learning Challenge: Students learn about the carbon cycle and disruptors to that cycle. They then develop a comprehensive plan to prevent or mitigate those disruptors and restore the balance of the carbon cycle.
- Teacher guide
- Student guide
- Carbon cycle overview
- Description of the carbon cycle disruptors
- Inquiry activity to learn about the details of each carbon cycle (short and long-term)
- Research planner
- Solutions exploration guide
- Presentation Outline
- Reflection
- Rubric and inquiry activity answer key - a guide of possible student responses. Note: Because this is an inquiry activity, and there are several routes a carbon atom could take through the system, there will not be one correct answer.
Bundle Part 3 - Consequences of Climate Change Problem-Based Learning Challenge: Students choose a global community and examine the consequences of climate change on that particular community. They then develop a hypothetical comprehensive plan to reduce the consequences of climate change on that community.
- Teacher guide
- Student challenge description
- Research templates with scaffolding questions related to climate change consequences
- Solution brainstorming tools including solution research categories, a template for weighing the costs and benefits of solutions, and a solutions concept map
- A comprehensive solution plan (final product) proposal checklist
- Learning reflection questions
- Problem-based learning rubric
Bundle Part 4 - Our Climate Future Community Action Project: Students brainstorm ways that personally play a role in solving the climate change challenge that our world is currently facing. Students develop a plan of action and take action.
- Teacher guide
- Two project proposals (1 - research the issue, 2- take action)
- Exploring solutions brainstorming guide
- Rubric 1: teacher-created PBL rubric for part 1 - researching the issue
- Rubric 2: student-generated PBL rubric template for part 2 - taking action
- Category and levels of mastery word banks for student-generated project rubrics
