Description

The importance of recipe comprehension for high school and transition-age students in special education is significant, as it supports a wide range of life skills and academic goals.
As a teacher who promotes this skill in the classroom almost daily, I struggled to find logical comprehension questions related to images of recipes that were clear, legible, and replicated those found in the real world — so I created my own!

Why recipe comprehension? Understanding recipes helps students learn to prepare their own meals, promoting self-sufficiency and reducing reliance on caregivers. It also strengthens functional reading skills by exposing students to key vocabulary words ("chop," "bake," "mix) in the step-by-step instructions. Additionally, recipe reading and comprehension reinforces math skills in regard to counting, measuring, fractions, and time management. These are all valuable skills for our special education students to learn, maintain, and master!
