Refraction, Reflection & Diffraction (Optics) Stations
Share

Description

Some material is best taught through self exploration and inquiry. I typically give students 2 to 3 90 minute class periods to complete the stations. There are 6 total. 3 are conceptual and 3 are mathematical. They cover three common types of optical interactions - refraction, reflection and diffraction. The slides are all meant for students to be able to complete independently while you act as a facilitator. I usually upload all 6 slide decks - students make their own copies of the conceptual slides to complete and then are viewers on the mathematical slides. The conceptual slides each have an activity for students to complete hands on in the classroom.

Product Includes:

  • 6 Slide Decks (3 conceptual slide decks, 3 mathematical)
  • Directions
  • Link to Examplars
  • Link to Keys

Optional Additional Materials:

  • Snell's Law Kit
  • Mirrors
  • Diffraction Pool

NGSSHS-PS4-5
Communicate technical information about how some technological devices use the principles of wave behavior and wave interactions with matter to transmit and capture information and energy. Examples could include solar cells capturing light and converting it to electricity; medical imaging; and communications technology. Assessments are limited to qualitative information. Assessments do not include band theory.
NGSSHS-PS4-1
Use mathematical representations to support a claim regarding relationships among the frequency, wavelength, and speed of waves traveling in various media. Examples of data could include electromagnetic radiation traveling in a vacuum and glass, sound waves traveling through air and water, and seismic waves traveling through the earth. Assessment is limited to algebraic relationships and describing those relationships qualitatively.
