Description

This concise, to the point and no-prep representing functions lesson is a great way to teach & introduce how to identify the independent and dependent variable in a functional relationship and different ways to represent functions to your students. The beginning of the guided notes go over key words for the domain and range in a function and include an in depth example of different ways to represent functional relationships, as well as two identify the independent/dependent variable problems. Students and teachers love how easy these notes are to follow and understand.

These notes get straight to the point of the skill being taught, which I have found is imperative for the attention span of teenagers! They are also a great tool for students to refer back to.

Excellent Resource for Introducing Multiple Representations of Functions!

Met expectations
Great value
Standards-aligned
I used this resource with my Algebra 1 students during our introduction to representing functions, and it was incredibly helpful for building foundational understanding. The notes on page 1 clearly explain the roles of input and output, and the DIXI/ROYD chart provided an easy-to-remember reference that my students immediately connected with. The essential question at the top helped anchor our discussion about how functions can be represented in tables, equations, and graphs. My students enjoyed working through the real-world Tasty Sweets problem, and the layout made it simple to transition from the verbal description to writing an equation, creating a table, and then graphing the function. The clean structure helped students visually see how each representation connects. The independent and dependent variable practice at the bottom of the page was a great formative check and sparked good conversation. The answer key (page 2) was thorough, clearly labeled, and extremely helpful for modeling and for quickly checking student work. This is a well-designed, student-friendly resource that made teaching this topic smoother and more engaging. Highly recommend for any Algebra 1 classroom!

Understand that a function from one set (called the domain) to another set (called the range) assigns to each element of the domain exactly one element of the range. If 𝘧 is a function and 𝘹 is an element of its domain, then 𝘧(𝘹) denotes the output of 𝘧 corresponding to the input 𝘹. The graph of 𝘧 is the graph of the equation 𝘺 = 𝘧(𝘹).
