Description
Let’s face it, teaching the research paper can be the bane of teaching English. It is a long and complicated process, and is especially daunting for students who have low skills, a lack of maturity, and/or are English learners. I have taught in low-performing, urban high schools for many years, and have seen the gamut of research paper units and guidelines for the high school level. Though many of them are well-done and very thorough (as in 40 pages of directions and 6 weeks of class time), they are too much for my students, who often give up somewhere in the process. I created this 10-page consumable student guide to streamline the process as much as possible and to make it easy for students to access the strategies that they need. This guide is interactive because after the students receive a short lesson for each step, they will then complete that step directly in the guide. The pages of the guide also serve as cheat sheets that the students can refer back to often.
Students are required to collect four sources of information and to use three in their essay. Directions are given for online research only, but this can be expanded to teacher preference.
The students will complete the research process in nine steps. The only steps that they will complete outside of the student guide are the collecting of their research and the writing of the paper.
I generally give 3-4 weeks for the whole process as we do the entire assignment in class.

All verified TPT purchases
Hello, my name is Lara and I have a serious addiction to TPT products. :) I probably do need an intervention for buying different versions of the same product. That said, I have purchased several research paper guides. Each time I think, how can 100's of people be wrong? Usually there is enough good stuff included to warrant an "A" rating from me, but it still isn't exactly what I want.
I have been looking for an extremely user-friendly, step-by-step guide for my middle school history students. THIS IS IT! I cannot believe I almost didn't purchase it because I was trying to talk myself out of it (see first paragraph).
I am so pleased with this guide! I cannot thank you enough!! Yay!
If you are looking for a user-friendly guide, this is it! My additions, I printed every step with different colored paper, bound the guides with a plastic binder, printed a cover on decorative paper, and changed the examples to be more relevant to my student's particular topic (I only have 15 students, not several classes that require this--otherwise I wouldn't have had time to do that). I have already had a parent email me and say she is just thrilled with this guide and knows it will help her son write a research paper.
Lara, thank you so much for the thorough feedback!
This made writing research paper process with my 8th graders easy. They understood to follow the steps in order and then easily type a final product with little tweaking on my part to make it work for my curriculum. Great product, Thanks!
You're welcome! Thanks for the great feedback.
This was perfect for my workshop presentation.
Great! Thanks!
