Respect Module Three: Resource Four (Create Your Respect Pact)
Share

Description

This Create Your Respect Pact resource is a practical, student-driven toolkit designed to transform classroom culture from the ground up. Moving beyond vague "be nice" directives, this activity challenges students to analyze the mechanics of respect and draft their own actionable code of conduct.

Resource Overview

This comprehensive worksheet guides students through four distinct phases of social-emotional development:

  • Decoding Respect: Students learn to distinguish between Recognition Respect (the unconditional baseline of dignity owed to all humans) and Appraisal Respect (earned admiration for excellence or character).
  • Behavioral Brainstorming: Using a "Looks Like, Sounds Like" framework, students identify concrete behaviors for different school zones, such as the classroom and the hallway.
  • Identifying the "Disrespect Trap": Students proactively call out negative behaviors like sarcasm and interrupting to better understand what to avoid.
  • The Class Code: Students propose five core agreements covering communication, feedback, inclusion, conflict resolution, and digital kindness.
  • Personal Commitment: The resource concludes with a formal individual pledge to improve their "Respect Game" and a plan for how to react when witnessing disrespect.

Why This Resource is Essential

For Educators:

  • Promotes Student Agency: Rather than imposing rules, this resource allows students to co-create their environment, leading to higher buy-in and accountability.
  • Provides a Clear Framework: It offers a structured way to discuss complex social dynamics, making it an ideal "Student Accountability and Growth Assessment" for advisory or homeroom.
  • Proactive Management: By defining the "Disrespect Trap" early, teachers can reference student-created definitions to resolve future conflicts more effectively.

For Students:

  • Builds Social Literacy: Helps students understand that they don't have to be friends with everyone to treat them with basic human dignity (Recognition Respect).
  • Ensures Psychological Safety: By drafting agreements on valuing ideas and feedback, students help build a space where they feel safe sharing without judgment.
  • Practical Life Skills: The focus on "specific actions, not just vague words" gives students a tangible roadmap for navigating high school social hierarchies and digital spaces.
