Description

Looking for a no-prep rhetoric unit that contains engaging, relevant, and rigorous materials? Fortunately, this 5-6 week Rhetorical Analysis Unit Bundle represents 21st Century learning at its best! Students will participate in a variety of analysis activities: from analyzing historical speeches and viewing modern advertisements to watching and analyzing movie speeches aimed to motivate and inspire audiences around the globe. Then, when students have mastered how to evaluate rhetorical strategies - including rhetorical devices and appeals - within smaller texts, they can delve into Elie Wiesel's masterfully crafted "Hope, Despair, and Memory" Nobel Prize speech, where they can learn about the power of memory and the future of humanity, all while they annotate and rhetorically analyze the strategies Wiesel uses to impact his audience. Plus, students will create and present their own Persuasive Advertisement Project, one that allows them to creatively show their mastery of rhetoric at the end of the unit.

I love this bundle. All of the texts and graphic orgs are great. My only issues with it were 1) it is very advanced, some of the texts are difficult for a 9th grader to decipher and 2) the slides teaching the rhetorical devices doesn't have all the terms that the study sheet lists or that is listed in the speeches they're annotating. I had to make my own slides and find my own examples to supplement what wasn't there. I think the slides should have all the terms. Other than that, this saved me TONS of time searching for excerpts and creating materials and I very much so appreciate it.

Your Rhetorical Analysis Unit has been a highly valuable resource for my Year 10 English students. It offered a well-structured sequence of engaging, hands-on activities that built understanding and confidence when analysing rhetorical strategies. Particularly useful for me and my studnets were the list of 25 rhetorical devices with definitions, the SOAPSTone analysis activity, and the film speech analysis tasks. I did primarily purchase this Unit for the movie speeches. And these worked better than I anticipated! The inclusion of a variety of movie speeches allowed my students to step back from real-world contexts and focus on rhetorical appeals and the use of technquies. These tasks prompted class discussions and helped students develop a deeper understanding of the purpose and impact of language choices. The unit had a good balance between challenge and accessibility. It was rigorous yet enjoyable, effective, and engaging. I absolutely recommend it to other teachers and I plan to reuse it next year.
